about studio apotroes

studio apotroes exists to fashion furniture and materials that are conscious, alluring, and accessible.

studio apotroes is American made, Black woman owned design forward sustainable furniture shop. Our pieces are made in our San Antonio studio made using local and sustainably sourced materials like wood, recycled metal and glass, diverted stone, organic fabric, and plant based upholstery materials. We marry traditional and new fabrication techniques and construction techniques like mortise and tenon and dowel joinery to create furniture built to last multiple generations. Our pieces sit between art and furniture to push the boundaries on the contemporary understanding of furniture design and materiality to provide a new image of sustainability that is inclusive of multiple aesthetics. Our definition of sustainability is holistic and expands beyond the conventional one focused on purely on the natural environment. We are developing a company that is also culturally and financially sustainable. We are priced as such to provide our employees with a living wage and ensure that the materials we use are sourced to match this ethos. Each of our pieces are made to order to minimize waste, and as such have a lead time of typically 6-8 weeks. Our narrative driven pieces are inspired and designed by our founder and owner, Brianna Nichole Love, life and relationships with the people and world around her.

What does apotroes mean? Apotroes comes from the word apotropaic which is used to describe objects designed to avert or ward off evil. Our pieces are designed to ward off boring and unconsidered design as well as environmental destruction.
